The History of Domaine Margelle Vineyards

The Dream

The dream that led to Domaine Margelle began while hiking trails that wound by French vineyards and ancient villages, each with its own unique expression. A love of wine and connection to place led Steve and Marci Taylor to begin imagining their own expression of that dream.

The foothills of the eastern Willamette Valley with its rocky soils and climate similar to Burgundy, reminded them of the places they had visited. They purchased the property that is today known as “Domaine Margelle” in 2005. The dry stack stone walls that enclose the vineyard were built stone by stone as a tribute to the vineyard and led to the name “Domaine Margelle”, which is French for Stonewall Estates. The initial goal was to do a single vineyard bottling from the 15 year old vines that became the first estate bottling produced in 2007.

We invite you to visit and share with us this sense of place. We offer an assortment of ways to enjoy our vistas, from private tastings and vineyard tours to estate dinners. Most of all we offer the fruit of the vine. The right wine brings us together. May your dreams be many, your friends constant and your life full.

Martinez Family Wall

The wall surrounding the vineyard at Domaine Margelle is the creation of the José Martinez family. The stonewall became the inspiration for our vineyard name. Many weekends were spent with the entire Martinez family gathering rocks from the property and carefully placing them to create our dry stack walls. This always included much laughter and song. Today, Alonzo Martinez is the onsite vineyard manager. He and his brother George tend the vines with great attention encouraging them to be ‘fruitful & multiply’.

A Family Affair

The Taylor family is very much involved in the creation and growth of Domaine Margelle. Megan Taylor has been key in researching the type of vines to plant and helping build the wine business. Brianna Taylor steps in when she can and is often found during harvest joining in the vendage.
